What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. - Jane Goodall
2021 Project: Well Women Clinic
Objective: As a supporting club to the Rotary Club of Calgary West, this project will aim to help provide early detection (& training), diagnostics and treatment of breast and cervical cancer for Sierra Leone’s most vulnerable women.
Background
Diagnostics and treatment of breast cancer remain grossly under funded and so come at a extremely high cost for Sierra Leone’s poorest families. Screening, diagnostics and treatment of cervical cancer also remains grossly underfunded. Consequently, many women who have cervival and/or breast cancer go undiagnosed and untreated. In a country where over 70% of its population live below the poverty line and 86% of the people who live in the countryside (i.e. Bo) live below the poverty line, the costs associated with screening (early detection), diagnostics and treatment presents a large barrier to accessing the necessary healthcare needed to manage their health conditions.
This project is to provide direct access to screening, diagnostics and treatment for women in Freetown and Bo District while enhancing awareness and education around issues important to their health and ability to thrive. In addition the capacity of the Well Women Clinic will grow to directly influence advocacy for the standard of care these women need amoung community, corporate and government leaders as well as fellow care providers.
